I'd seen the Treasury of Petra in pictures. Now, as we made our way toward it under an almost full moon, the stars glistened and deep history permeated the night air. I fell back from the group—beckoned by the chatter of my own footsteps, wanting to be alone with the ghosts that had previously walked on these sands. The sandstone hills loomed bright; no flashlight was needed. I was in complete and utter awe.

Petra at night is pure magic. One is transported in time. I continued onward through the cliffs to the crescendo: the Treasury. There it appeared, enshrouded in lanterns, looming against the galaxy. There were no words, just a burning desire to be alone with the magnificence of man’s creation. 

I lingered, longing to just sit and watch, knowing that I was in a city of trade routes and kings; of tombs and cave dwellings. And I’d only just seen the entrance. Petra is so much more— city that takes days to fully explore. This place is a must.
